Case Background: Abdominal Fat and Body Image Anxiety

For many office workers who sit for long periods or postpartum mothers, the abdomen is often the area where fat accumulates most easily and is hardest to eliminate through regular exercise. Even if body weight is within a normal range, loose lower abdominal skin and “love handles” on the sides can affect the overall contour of the figure, limiting clothing choices and potentially leading to persistent body image anxiety.

The patient in this case is a typical example: with a normal BMI but noticeable localized fat accumulation, she had good skin elasticity and primarily sought to improve her waist and abdominal contour, aiming for a tighter, smoother body curve.

Preoperative Assessment and Treatment Plan

During the consultation, the doctor conducted a detailed palpation and assessment of the patient’s abdominal fat distribution, skin thickness, and elasticity. Given her thick fat layer but good skin retraction ability, a personalized liposuction plan was devised:

Precise Targeting: Liposuction focused on the upper abdomen, lower abdomen, and flanks to reshape the waistline rather than simply reducing weight.
Technique Selection: Low-negative-pressure, multi-layered uniform suction was employed to minimize postoperative swelling and bruising while protecting subcutaneous blood vessels and nerves, ensuring smooth skin contour afterward.
Safety Limits: The volume of fat removed per session was strictly controlled in accordance with medical safety standards to avoid skin indentations or excessive metabolic burden caused by over-suction.

Surgical Procedure and Recovery Management

The surgery was performed under sterile conditions by an experienced plastic surgeon. Tumescent fluid was injected through small incisions to separate fat cells before they were gently aspirated. The procedure emphasized meticulous detail to minimize trauma.

Key Points for Postoperative Recovery:

Compression Garments: Patients are advised to wear medical-grade compression garments as directed, typically for 1–3 months. This helps control bleeding and swelling, promotes adherence between the skin and underlying tissues, and prevents skin laxity.
Drainage and Care: Minor fluid leakage may occur in the early postoperative period, which is normal. Keep wounds clean and dry, change dressings on schedule, and prevent infection.
Lifestyle Adjustments: Avoid strenuous exercise during recovery; maintain a light diet rich in high-protein foods to support tissue repair. After full recovery, moderate core training is recommended to sustain long-term results.

Postoperative Results and Rational Expectations

After several months of recovery, the patient showed significant improvement in waist and abdominal circumference, with a flatter, firmer abdomen and a more defined side profile. This transformation was not due to drastic weight loss but rather the refined reshaping of body contours.

Note: Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a substitute for weight loss. It is suitable for individuals with localized fat deposits and good skin elasticity. Maintaining postoperative results requires a healthy lifestyle. All cosmetic medical procedures carry individual variability and potential risks. It is advisable to undergo face-to-face evaluation at a reputable medical facility by a qualified physician before making a decision.
